Session 4
Day later we were prepared to continue the wilderness exploration once again. I have decided to take with us four days worth of food instead, which will encumber us a bit but not for long anyway.
Water will have to be found.
Considering the road more to the south was already explored. We deemed it approporiate to explore eastwards in the regions we simply moved through.
During our travel, we have met a group of five soldiers from Woodriver. They looked to be patroling the area for intruders.
Once they have spotted us they asked us what we were doing here, one of them was looking at my backpack and our equipment in general.
They looked less upstanding than normal to me.
I tried to persuade them to leave us alone but they flatly rejected and told us that they will need to check our equipment for contraband.
With a sigh I took out 5 gold pieces from my purse and tried to persuade them again.
The one who looked like a leader of the bunch smiled and told us to go on our way.
Fucking scum.
I remembered his face.
We left them quickly and started exploring the area more thoroughly.
Nothing interesting was in this riverbank, we camped, eaten our fill and used water from the river.
In the morning we pushed towards the hills from before.
Day after that we moved north east along the river and into the unknown. Two days of food left.
Before we even had a chance to explore, we encountered what appeared to be three giant toads about 250 ft from us.
Giant Toads HP 8 16 14
The toads looked as big as a grown man and their long tongues swished around as they started hopping towards us. I decided that fighting such powerful looking toads wasn't in our best interest so we tried running away.
Unfortunately the road we found ourselves in didn't allow such quick escape and the toads were inevitably gaining in on us quickly.
The toads are 200 ft away.
It's time to use my magic, we may very well die here.
I need to think this thoroughly.
First I used the 'earth' word and spent 2 spell points to mold the earth around us into a wall of sorts between the trees around us. Barely within power of this spell so it's pretty tight. Thanks to this we should be able to force only one such giant toad to attack us properly.
They are 150 ft away.
This will be hard.
100 ft away.
50 ft away.
Rolling initiative 1d6 us, 1d6 them. 1 vs 2
The first giant toad enters the sole gap and tries to strike Edmund who holds his shield hard.
He is struck with a blow so powerful that he staggers barely holding on. Shit.
The other two toads jump around trying to enter the encirclement but the trees around us prevent such a jump.
The dog is released and tries to bite the toad. 8 hp Toad
It bites the toad hard, causing it to shrink away. 4 dmg
Now Edmund counterattacks.
He pierces the toad throat and it dies, the body blocks the gap for the moment.
I use this chance to heal him.
Using word of healing I spend 2 spell points as well as a spell component that is my healing herb to heal him for d6 hp.
He is healed by 5 hp and is back in the fight as he were.
Morale check since a toad died. 2d6 vs 6, 5 and 6, none of them run.
Rolling initiative 1d6 us, 1d6 them. 5 vs 2
I go first and cast a spell using earth miracle to cause Edmund skin to become harder like a stone.
Cost is 1 and I also use a spell component so he gains 2 AC for about a minute. He is about as tough as someone in a scale armor barring his shield.
Now edmund pushes the giant toad body, leaving a small gap for us to leave, then our dog runs out and bites the nearest toad. 16 hp Toad
It misses.
Now the toad attacks the dog but fails to as the dog dodges out of the way from the tongue.
The second toad attacks the dog too as its nearest.
Our dog is snatched by the flying tongue and brought closer to the second toad, however it fails to swallow it, the damage is done however with a mighty bite. 4 dmg
Rolling initiative 1d6 us, 1d6 them. 3 vs 2
The dog tries to bite back upon the toad that snatched it. 1 dmg
15 hp Toad
Edmund then comes towards it and also tries to stab it. 6 dmg
9 hp Toad
I use my lightning word for free thanks to being a storm caller and blast this toad for 1d6 dmg.
2d8 vs 10 = 6
The toad fails to save against the power of the storms. 1 dmg
8 hp Toad
Now the toads spread their tongue against the dog again.
The dog manages to dodge the first blow but the second smashes it into the ground with a painful cry. 3 dmg
Rolling initiative 1d6 us, 1d6 them. 2 vs 4
The Toads attack persistently but fail to deal the ultimate blow!
I cry at the top of my lungs and blast my lightning!
2d8 vs 10 = 12
Unfortunately the toad saves vs my magic and it merely deals 1 dmg.
7 hp Toad
The dog now tries to bite the insufferable toad. 4 dmg
3 hp Toad
I order the dog to come back to me into the safety of my earthen wall.
Now Edmund attacks with his javelin but fails to do so.
Rolling initiative 1d6 us, 1d6 them. 3 vs 5
The toads who lost their target for the moment focus their blows on Edmund.
One of them manages to maneuver through his shield and strike his chest with a smash. 3 dmg
Edmund tries to stab it. 5 dmg
The toad dies with a painful tremble.
Morale Check 2d6 vs 6 = 10
The last toad gives us one last look before jumping away and running towards the river. Seconds later it jumps into it and escapes.
We live!
As we sit a bit to rest from this dangerous encounter we drink some water and get to opening the two toads stomachs. Perhaps they have eaten someone in the past who had valuables, who knows?
This is what we manage to find out.
20 gp worth of coins, six pieces of some cheap looking jewelry along with one expensive looking jewelry, not sure how much these are worth.
We pack our things and try to explore this area during rest of the day.
There is some kind of mine here.
The entrance is made out of some clay bricks and there is an interconnected watchtower of some kind here.
There are some kind of hangings here which are overgrown with folliage, thus the entrance looks pretty hidden.
The architecture indicates elven society. Elves do not often simply build mines, is there some cultural significance to this place? It also looks maintained if long ago, but then elven craftsmanship is enduring.
Exploring deeper and find a cache of loot inside, beyond this is collapsed tunnel.
We have hit a big treasure here, who knows elves like leaving so much valuables in their mines!
1200 gold worth of coinage, ten cheap looking jewelry, two expensive looking ones as well as some magic items of some kind.
Edmund and I simply jump from happines at obtaining so much treasure, it will solve my money problems for a long time.
Packing our things we swiftly leave for Woodriver, we also make sure to cover the loot with our waning food supplies and other clutter. No sense in being reckless.
